The Motivational Self-Talk
The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.
Marcus Aurelius
THIS CHAPTER IS the heart of this book. I congratulate you for reaching this milestone. Here, you will learn how to increase your intrinsic motivation in a very direct way. There's a good chance that this will be the most valuable chapter for you in the entire book. All it takes is a willingness to apply the below content regularly.
In a way, this procedure creates a mental button that you just push to increase your motivation. Much like your car picks up speed with a few hand and foot movements, this procedure creates motivation when you apply it. Whenever I notice that I lack motivation or I would like to have more, I apply this method. I no longer have to wait until I have enough motivation on my own. Instead, I can independently generate as much motivation as I need to accomplish everything I set my mind to.
This may sound too good to be true. I can only recommend that you try it because the best way to dispel doubts is to experience how easy it is to increase motivation. For this to succeed, however, you need both practice and the right expectations.
The motivation you generate with motivational self-talk is not a quick motivational boost that comes fast and strong and quickly fades away, it's more like you have a little more motivation right away, but that little bit of extra motivation lasts for a few hours, and sometimes longer. At first, this may not sound like much of an improvement, but as you get into the habit of using this procedure frequently, your motivation will grow stronger and stronger over time. A high level of motivation becomes increasingly the norm; more and more a part of your identity.
As mentioned at the end of the last chapter, it's all about saying lots of motivating thoughts to yourself. Many people would agree that what we think on a regular basis has a great influence on us. However, most people don't realize how big that influence is; they don't realize how powerful our thoughts really are.
Everything we perceive is interpreted by our thoughts. Whether we see something as good or bad, we can only tell with the help of our thoughts. It is as William Shakespeare wrote:
"There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so."[68]
When we have control over our thoughts, we also have control over the interpretation of our environment. You can do incredible things with this power. Any emotion can theoretically be strengthened or weakened. In this procedure, we focus on motivation and the resulting effect on our self-discipline and productivity. It should be obvious that if we think motivational thoughts regularly it will be extremely helpful to our self-discipline in the long run.
Many people are inhibited when it comes to changing their thoughts and believe they have no control over them. You could just as easily suggest that they change the weather.
